Introduction to the 9 Guiding Values
Imagine if there were 9 main motivators , which drives people in life and let's assume that the interests of all people on this earth could be sorted into these new categories. And let's assume that we designate these 9 main motivators or interests with the term Conductivity . And we would assume that these 9 guiding values were...
- FREEDOM
- SAFETY
- ACKNOWLEDGMENT
- POWER
- INTEGRITY
- INTENSITY
- HARMONY
- WELFARE
- CURIOSITY
Then you could think of many things about it. What car would a person drive who strives for FREEDOM in life and what car does someone drive who wants SAFETY? Would both choose the same vehicle? Would someone who cares about POWER look more towards the future or more towards the past? Would someone who prefers INTEGRITY be interested in details or is he someone who is only interested in the big picture?
What's behind it?
This conductance model was developed by Adrian Swiss developed. In the course of many years of his work as an executive coach, Adrian has found out that there seem to be always the same interests of his clients and has crystallized these 9 guiding values on the basis of his practical work. These guiding values serve excellently in his work as an executive coach. As part of his coaching training, he has been teaching the guiding values for at least 20 years. Important: It's a model that seems to be helpful. There are valuable hints and I use it in practically every one of my coaching sessions.
What is it good for?
The main benefit of these guiding values is to work out the positive intention behind a behavior. If one of the guiding values has been tested as relevant, it makes the client more "awake" with regard to the more unconscious intentions. Once the more precise positive intention has been determined, it can be worked out on the basis of this information what resources the client would need to develop a different behavior. I have a possible variant in the blog post What's the intention behind the intention? described.
There are many other practical uses for the conductive values.
What else is there?
Adrian Schweizer is not alone with his idea!
Its 9 conductivities can be applied surprisingly well to the motives of the LINC Institute which are derived here from the scientific Big Five model .
Even the more than a thousand year old Enneagram with its 9 personality types, it makes sense to map one-to-one to the 9 guiding values.
